This is a rare butterfly in the islands. Towards the northern and eastern margins of its range, the Speckled Wood breeds only in woodland habitats and therefore has a very restricted distribution in the islands. It is only commonly recorded at one location from March to October

The larvae feed on various grasses, including False Brome Brachypodium sylvaticum, Cock's-foot Dactylis glomerata, Yorkshire-fog Holcus lanatus, and Common Couch Elytrigia repens
