Xestia c-nigrum (Linnaeus, 1758)

Setaceous Hebrew Character

The main distribution in Scotland is in the east, being sparsely recorded farther west. There are just eleven records for the Outer Hebrides as of 2024, mostly in the south. On the wing from June to August, autumn sitings are presumed to be migrants. Found in woodland, grassland machair and gardens. The larvae feed on herbaceous plants such as stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) and dead-nettles (Lamium spp.).
