Hippocharia semele (Linnaeus, 1758)
Grayling
A common and predominantly coastal species, with a preference for dry open ground. Most records are from the southern end of the archipelago. Masters of disguise, they settle with their wings closed and are difficult to detect on stoney, broken ground. Active from July to September. Eggs are laid on grasses and overwinter as caterpillars.
