Aglais io (Linnaeus, 1758)

Peacock

Although nationally common it is a recent coloniser to the Outer Hebrides and uncommon in the islands. It overwinters as an adult and appears from spring onwards. Eggs are laid on stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) where the larvae spin a tent-like web.
