Aglais urticae (Linnaeus, 1759)

Small Tortoiseshell

A once common species, it has suffered a dramatic population collapse in recent years. It overwinters as an adult and appears from spring onwards. Eggs are laid on stinging nettles (Urtica dioica), the larval food-plant.
