Common throughout most of Scotland but scarce in the north of the mainland and the Outer Hebrides, with just six records from South Uist as of 2024. On the wing from July to August in woodland, gardens and hedgerows. The larvae feed on a wide variety of trees including pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), birches (Betula spp.) and aspen (Populus tremula), as well as feeding on small larvae of other moth species.
