Family: Tortricidae Checklist Number: 49.072
Acleris effractana (Hübner, [1799])
Northern Scalloped Tortrix
This is commonly recorded in the Outer Hebrides with all current records from the southern islands. Very similar to Acleris emargana and dissection is necessary for some specimens. “However, examples with a shallow costal scallop that are dull greyish brown and almost unmarked except for groups of blackish raised scales are likely to be A. effractana.” – Sterling & Parsons (2023: 360). On the wing from July to October over grassland, moorland and scrubby areas. The food-plants are willows (Salix spp.). Interestingly, looking at NBN data, this species is absent from Scotland, except here. Conversely, Acleris emargana is widely distributed across Scotland but absent from here.
