Family: Yponomeutidae   Checklist Number: 16.002

Yponomeuta padella   (Linnaeus, 1758)

Orchard Ermine

The distribution in Scotland is sparse with most records from the south-west. There are just two July records of this species, both from South Uist, which is probably a wind-blown wanderer rather than resident on the Outer Hebrides. Similar to others in the family but slightly smaller, it has a greyer background colour and different arrangement of spots. Larvae feed gregariously in a web on Prunus species and hawthorn (Crataegus).
