Rheumaptera undulata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Scallop Shell

A distinctive and attractive species that is sparsely recorded in Scotland, which has a western bias. First recorded from South Uist in 2019 with several subsequent records from the same site. It was recorded from Lewis in 2023. The flight period is June to July in open, damp woodland. The larvae feed on willows (Salix spp.), aspen (Populus tremula) and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus).
