Ourapteryx sambucaria  (Linnaeus, 1758)

Swallow-tailed Moth

This large, striking, unmistakable moth is found throughout much of southern Scotland. Its range continues northward up the west coast to Skye and east to the Black Isle but is absent from the mountains of the interior. It appears to be increasing its range with stray examples having been found in Orkney and Shetland. The first for the Outer Hebrides came to light in South Uist in July 2022. The flight period is from late June to August. The larvae feed upon a wide range of broad-leaved trees and shrubs including ivy (Hedera helix), common elder (Sambucus nigra) and horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum).
