Nonagria typae (Thunberg, 1784)
Bulrush Wainscot
This species’ range is mainly southern Scotland becoming more easterly as it continues north. The first record for the Outer Hebrides was light trapped on South Uist in September 2023. A rather large, stout, broad-winged species. It shows white veins and black spots across the outer wing edge. As its name suggests the larval food plant includes both species of bulrush (Typha latifolia) and (T. angustifolia). The adults do not feed.
