Bryotropha domestica (Haworth, 1828)
House Moss-moth
This is a remarkable record as, according to the NBN Atlas, there are just a handful for Scotland, all to the south of the Great Glen. It was light-trapped at Borve on the west of Barra in August 2024 by a visiting naturalist.
The female creates a silken chamber in mosses growing on walls where she lays her eggs. The larvae feed on the mosses and pupate within the chamber. Adults are on the wing from mid-May to early August in England, but may be different for Scotland.
