Family: Noctuidae Checklist Number: 73.126
Amphipoea fucosa (Freyer, 1830)
Saltern Ear
The Ear moths as a group are similar and require dissection for identification. An added problem in the Outer Hebrides is the apparent increasing rate of hybridisation with the numerous Large Ear (Amphipoea lucens). The effect is that the genitalia of many examples of 'Ear aggs.' now show some features of both species. Saltern Ear has been found on between 2 August and 4 October, especially on the machair. It is undoubtedly present on other islands in the southern chain.
